January 29 and February 5: OCCUPY ROME! How Paul the Protester Created Revolutionary Christianity Usually Paul gets a bad rap for telling women to be silent in church and slaves to obey their masters. Using classics scholar Sara Ruden's book Paul Among the People: The Apostle Reinterpreted and Reimagined in His Own Time, we will gain a fresh understanding of some of Paul's key teachings in the context of Greco-Roman culture and discover how revolutionary he really was. This two part series will be led by Interim Associate Pastor Juli Wilson-Black.
February 12 and 19: Looking Ahead with Grace: Preparing Practically & Spiritually for the Future Are you part of the "Whopper Generation" where life is as stuffed and stressed as a fast-food menu? Families that once extended horizontally with a bumper crop of children now extend vertically, up and down the age ladder. Younger families to older folks need to have plans and paperwork ready in the event of illness or death. Topics include: health insurance, personal inventory, wills and advance directives, options for senior housing, the dreaded task of downsizing, and compassionate ethical and spiritual issues at the end of life, including palliative or hospice care and what that means. Think about how to approach these issues gracefully and plan ahead so that decisions will be yours instead of circumstances or someone else forcing them on you. Parish Nurse, Joanie Friend and Gretchen Gaines, LCSW-C and Grief Counselor, will facilitate this series, which is appropriate for all ages and stages.
February 26: Today's Addictions Pastoral Counselor, Barbara Jacquette, and Gretchen Gaines, LCSW-C, will facilitate this session which addresses the addictions which snare so many of us - from smart phones to fast food. Participants are invited to bring their experiences and questions for a discussion of the power of addictions and how we are affected by them. We will discuss the impact of addictions on our lives and strategies for moving toward change. Childcare will be provided for children of all ages.
